Making Waves: Val Smith

Making Waves is the podcast of the Society for Freshwater Science

Episode 2: From pollution to propulsion, Dr. Val Smith

Val Smith

This month’s podcast features Dr. Val Smith discussing algal biofuels and the future potential of using algae to produce liquid fuels for transportation.

Dr. Val Smith is a professor of ecosystem ecology at the University of Kansas. His research focuses on nutrients affect the structure and function of biological systems. Primarily this focuses on phytoplankton or algae. His research has demonstrated critical relationships between nutrient ratios and the presence of nuisance (and sometimes toxic) blue-green algae. More recently he is using these ideas to develop biofuels from algae. He is actively involved in University of Kansas’ Feedstock to Tailpipe Initiative.
