Integrating Requirements Management and Requirements Modeling – A Model-Based Approach

Abstract for Integrating Requirements Management and Requirements Modeling – A Model-Based Approach Model-based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is now an important part of systems engineering (SE) to support functional, performance, and other types of engineering analyses. The Object Management Group and The International Council on Systems Engineering jointly introduced modeling standards such as the Systems Modeling Language (SysML) that is helping to enable MBSE as a standard practice, and provide a foundation to integrate diverse models needed to fully specify and analyze systems. Over the past several years, the Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approach to system design and implementation has shown great potential within the systems engineering (SE) community. The International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) SE Vision 2020 defines MBSE as “the formalized application of modeling to support system requirements, design, analysis, verification and validation activities beginning in the conceptual design phase and continuing throughout development and later life cycle phases.” This presentation will describe a detailed approach to use SysML and the integration of No Magic’s Cameo Enterprise Architect (EA) with IBM’s Rational Dynamic Object Oriented Requirements System (DOORS) product. This process is an approach that intentionally uses a very small subset of the SysML constructs that allow the architect to effectively and efficiently create a high-level system design in order to relate requirements to that design. The process outlined in this presentation is used to perform requirements modeling using that high-level design in regards to identifying additional requirements. The presentation will also include a demonstration of NoMagic’s DataHub interface between Cameo EA and DOORS. William Fetech (Primary Presenter,Author), The MITRE Corporation, wfetech@mitre.org;
Mr. William Fetech retired from the Air Force in 1998 and joined MITRE in 2003. He is a Lead Systems Engineer located in San Antonio where he provides systems engineering processes/tools implementation guidance to programs with sponsors from the Air Force, DoD, and Federal agencies. He has over 30 year of experience in systems engineering and process/tool standardization and implementation. He has implemented IBM’s DOORS product on multiple programs over the past 7 years. In addition, Bill has provided DOORS training at MITRE. In 2011 and in 2014, Bill provided presentations at the IBM – Rational Users Conference.
