Arriving early? Then check out the Great Salt Lake Bird Festival from May 16-19, just days before the annual meeting starts. ATTRACTIONS:
  1. Temple Square: Visit Historic Temple Square where you will be immersed in 35 acres within the heart of Salt Lake City. It has rich history, gorgeous gardens and architecture. https://www.templesquare.com/
  2. Utah State Capitol: Built in 1916, the renovated neoclassical revival building offers original murals, exhibits and tours. https://utahstatecapitol.utah.gov/
  3. Red Butte garden and Arboretum: This Botanical garden features nature trails, workshops and an outdoor concert series. https://www.redbuttegarden.org/
  4. Tracy Aviary: Located in Liberty Park, this 8-acre aviary offers exhibits, shows, and encounters where guests can view and feed birds. https://www.tracyaviary.org/
  5. Natural History Museum of Utah: The Museum has a modern venue with 10 galleries exploring earth science and Utah's native cultures. https://nhmu.utah.edu/
  6. City Creek Center: Located in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City. This outdoor mall is a unique and fun place to do some shopping or grab a bite to eat. (Closed Sunday). https://www.shopcitycreekcenter.com/
  7. Ensign Peak: A hiking to the peak is a great way to view the city. Once at the top people can see all of Salt Lake City, best to go later in the evening to watch the sunset. https://utah.com/hiking/ensign-peak

Great Salt Lake (State Park): The largest natural lake west of the Mississippi River and the largest salt water lake in the western hemisphere, the Great Salt Lake is perhaps the best known geological feature in the area. https://www.visitsaltlake.com/things-to-do/attractions-and-historic-sites/the-great-salt-lake/
  3. Antelope Island: Hike, mountain bike or horseback ride the park's backcountry trails for spectacular views of lake and island scenery; spend a star-filled night in one of several primitive campsites; stroll along sandy beaches and take a dip in the lake's salty waters or step back in time with a visit to the Historic Fielding Garr Ranch. Antelope Island is home to free-ranging bison, mule deer, bighorn sheep, pronghorn (antelope), and many other desert animals. Millions of birds congregate along the shores surrounding the island, offering unparalleled opportunities for birding. Year round Interpretive opportunities round out the Antelope Island experience.

    Closure: To protect nesting birds, Egg Island and White Rock are closed to access year-round.

    Insects: During warm months, insects are present on the island and emerge at different times. Biting gnats (no-seeums) emerge in the spring (April - June). These are very tiny biting flies. Insect repellent is ineffective against the gnats; fine-mesh head nets are recommended along with long sleeves. They are not present along the water's edge.
    • Midges are non-biting flies that form columns along the causeway mid-spring through early fall. These are what cover your windshield while driving to and from the island.
    • Mosquitoes are present from mid- spring through early fall. Insect repellent is effective.
    • Brine Flies are non-biting flies that cover the shorelines and occasionally move onto land early-summer through fall. These flies are harmless and move out of the way when approached.

  4. Spiral Jetty: An earthwork sculpture constructed in April 1970. 2.5 hours north of Salt Lake City. https://utah.com/great-salt-lake-state-park/spiral-jetty
  5. Golden Spike National Monument: See the spot where the Union and Central Pacific Railroads joined their rails. Take tours and visit the visitors center to explore the history.
