BOB'S BEER TOUR

Sunday, May 20, 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm; Trip fee: $20

Location – Offsite, Start at COBO Center

This brewery tour starts at the COBO Center and visits three breweries near downtown Detroit: Batch Brewing, Atwater, Jolly Pumpkin Cafe, and possibly another. This will be a self-transported trip consisting of walking and Uber/Lyft. All costs on your own. The trip fee is a donation to the Pat Mulholland Endowment fund.

SFS-SRC STUDENT/ MENTOR MIXER

COBO Center - Atrium

The student-mentor mixer is designed to facilitate interactions between students and experienced professionals. Mentors may include aquatic science professors, research associates, post-doctoral researchers, government employees, and private consultants. This mixer provides students a great opportunity to network and engage in lively conversation with mentors and peers in a relaxed environment. Each student will be assigned to a group, and all students over 21will receive a complimentary drink ticket!

Primarily Undergraduate Institution (PUI) MIXER

A new event providing a casual opportunity to meet and network for faculty and undergraduate students from colleges and universities that primarily focus on teaching under-graduates. Location (TBA) convenient to the COBO Center. Appetizers are included and cash/credit bar will be available.

Join us for a riverfront sunrise yoga session on the Cobo Center Grand River View Ballroom Terrace, overlooking the Detroit River May 23, 2018 at 7 a.m. Cobo Center and Society for Freshwater Science are partnering to kick-off the 2018 #cobocares community engagement series. All proceeds from registration will benefit Bees in the D, a local honeybee education and protection non-profit. Please bring your own yoga mat, water bottle and good vibes.

Event-day registration will begin at 6:00 a.m. and the 1-hour session will begin at 7:00 a.m. Lauren of Citizen Yoga will be instructing an all-levels Slow Burn/ Basics session lasting 60 minutes. Parking is available for $15/ car on the Cobo roof. Cobo Center is also home to a MoGo and Detroit People Mover Station, so ride, drive or walk on over to join us for this event. We highly encourage donations of $10 or more. This event is open to the public.

Citizen Yoga is dedicated to providing students with the most comprehensive yoga experience, challenging for all physical levels. CY is an alignment-based (form focused) yoga studio that offers a variety of classes ranging from a faster paced Vinyasa to a Slow Burn/Basics. Currently, Citizen Yoga has studios in Royal Oak, Detroit and Bloomfield Hills. Bees in the D is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to create a cooperative effort between residents, schools, organizations, and businesses in the city of Detroit and Southeast Michigan to contribute to both the health of honey bee colonies and the education of their importance to our environment. As a sustainability initiative, Cobo Center is home to 4 honey bee hives, managed by Bees in the D.

A panel discussion about the peer review process. Come meet your Freshwater Science Associate Editors and take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions about how to do peer reviews, what to look for, and how to write a constructive review. We also will address effective ways to respond to peer reviews you receive during manuscript submission and review.

5k FUN RUN

Wednesday, May 23, 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

The annual SFS 5k run will start and finish immediately outside of the COBO on the Detroit Riverfront. The course will follow the Detroit Riverfront path east to Milliken State Park, loop through the park, and return west along the same path. Participants, please note that the Riverwalk is open to the public and there be other walkers, runners, strollers, and easy-goers along the route during our event. A lead cyclist will guide runners and volunteers will be stationed at turns throughout the course. All participants will receive a 5k run or conference meeting shirt. There will be a brief awards ceremony at the immediate conclusion of the event. A portion of the proceeds from the 5k event will go to the Detroit Riverwalk Conservancy and Milliken State Park. EARLY CAREER MIXER

The Early Career Mixer is a new event providing a casual opportunity for early career members to meet and network. The event is aimed at SFS members who have finished their terminal degree within the last 10 years. Meet at the Anchor Bar, 450 W. Fort Street (convenient to Cobo Center). Cash/credit bar available.

DETROIT PRINCESS RIVERBOAT

A banquet dinner, live music, and river cruise aboard the Detroit Princess riverboat, docked near the COBO Center, across the street from the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

EARLY CAREER WORKSHOP

The Early Career Workshop will focus on student mentoring and training. Panelists from a range of institutions will lead the discussion, and the scope will include both undergraduate and graduate mentoring. Open to SFS members who have finished their terminal degree within the last 10 years. Lunch is included.
